Students at Launceston College are very fortunate to be in an environment with outstanding facilities. We encourage students to take full advantage of these.
Launceston College has a fantastic library space - be describe it as inviting, interesting, industrious and innovative!
Opening hours: 8.15am – 4.30pm (or later by arrangement with the Library Manager)
At over 1000 square metres, the library includes:
- small group study rooms where students can collaborate on tasks
- a large silent study area equipped with individual study carrels and desk top computers
- an instructional classroom for use by students and teachers
- a large quiet study area comprised of study tables and individual desktop computers
- a vast online video library, ClickView, available to students and staff
- a virtual reality space for watching a range of VR programs
- an extensive collection of hard copy and electronic resources to assist students with research, study and assignments
- a First Aid officer and centre
- an amazing collection of exceptional student artwork
- a student printer
- and a busy workroom engaged in the production of ID photos, photographic work, handbooks, copying, binding, laminating, and an array of other tasks that support teaching, learning and extra- curricular activities

Computers/ICT
LC Sports Centre
Balancing your academic program with an involvement in recreational activities is an important aspect of your overall health and wellbeing while at College and part of developing positive, lifelong habits. Our Sports Centre consists of two sports halls, a climbing wall, cricket centre, and spa and a newly refurbished Fitness Gym and heated pool. Access to these areas is available every lunch hour and requires you to present your current Student ID.
Elcies Restaurant
Elcies Restaurant Café Bar at Launceston College offers industry standard facilities to enable students to receive and participate in quality training opportunities in all aspects of the Hospitality Industry.
Elcies Restaurant Café Bar has seating capacity for approximately 70 diners in a contemporary setting. Students are able to serve a variety of meal styles from a three course à la carte menu to café style lunches as well as morning and afternoon teas to cater for College functions.
As a part of our programs students are able to gain RSA qualifications and to make and serve a range of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. We also have a modern beer system that allows students to become skilled in the art of pouring a ‘good beer’.
Our kitchen has industry standard equipment, with a combi oven, walk-in freezer and cool room, large deep fryer, stainless steel benches and commercial dish washers.
Elcies offers a fantastic environment with quality teachers. We invite the public to visit us for morning tea from 10.00am – 10.45am on Wednesday and bar on Friday night from 3.45pm – 6.00pm. During Term 2, the public can join us for lunch from 12.00pm – 2pm and in Term 3 we offer a series of Friday night dinners. Bookings for lunch and dinner are essential. Automotive
Automotive courses offer learners the opportunity to gain an understanding of automotive systems through a combination of theoretical study and practical application of knowledge gained through following standard workshop procedures. Launceston College provides two automotive programs which include Automotive and Mechanical Technology and VET Certificate 2 in Automotive Vocational Preparation.
The Automotive and Mechanical technology (AMT) is a 150 hour course designed to give the learner an understanding of automotive systems and operating principles through a combination of theory and practical tasks.
The VET Certificate 2 program is a nationally recognized course requiring each student to complete 12 units of competency plus work placement. Each unit is a combination of theory and practical exercises, then completing a variety of assessments to pass.To gain entry to the VET program, students must complete an expression of interest, attend an interview and complete a short assessment quiz.
Both courses use the automotive workshop containing a number of fully operational engines and vehicles providing each student with the practical experience necessary to meet the demands of each program. In order to use the workshop, ALL students must have steel capped boots, combination overalls and a pair of safety glasses.
UEE22011 Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start)
Practical course work at Launceston College in VET Electrotechnology is undertaken in an electrical workshop that includes a mock-up house-frame for students to practise power and lighting wiring exercises.This workshop also allows OHS assessment tasks such as tool use and care, lifting, simple scaffolding and plasterboard repairs. Other practical work includes 12Vdc as well as 20 Vac light switching circuits, electronic circuitry tasks where simple, as well as branching circuit analysis are undertaken.
The electrical workshop has equipment for component identification, characteristics, assembly and soldering of simple as well as complex parallel circuits. Electrical equipment includes all the basic instruments used as standard in the electrical trade, such as IR and Earth continuity testers.
The course is designed to make students productive members of the workforce from the moment they enter an apprenticeship.
Media Suite
Launceston College’s Radio Station, LCFM 87.8, is unique in the K-12 educational sector in Tasmania in that we are the only live-to-air licensed student radio station in the state.
Students are able to enrol in either Level 2 Media-Radio or Level 3 Media-Radio at the College.The subjects teach students how to manage and run the College’s station that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students are able to create their own shows and work as a DJ in and out of class time.
The College has state of the art digital recording studios.There are three studios that contain industry standard equipment and all activity is logged and scheduled to the second. A major innovation has been simulcast streaming which allows any webhosted computer user access to the station content anywhere in the world.
Launceston College also boasts a dynamic video media suite and television studio where students studying the Media-Video strand at Level 2 or Level 3 can work with industry standard equipment to produce shows, documentaries and films. Multi camera films are made of the College Production and Dance Fever and students get first-hand experience in professional work contexts. Students experience both behind and in front of the camera work as they bring their creative visions to life.
Hairdressing and Beauty Salon
LC has a simulated work environment for students in the VET Salon Assistant and VET Retail Cosmetics program to practise the skills required to work in industry. The area is equipped with a reception area for students to meet clients as well as work stations for the provision of hairdressing or beauty services.
For hairdressing clients there is a wet area for washing, applying colours, conditioning treatments and rinsing clients’ hair. Individual work stations then give students space to blow dry and style a client’s hair in a style depending on the needs of the client.
Beauty clients can be treated to facials including luxurious facial massages and manicures. We also offer day, evening and special event makeup. Added services include false lash application and hand exfoliation and massage. We have relaxing beauty beds along with seating for the provision of our luxury services.
This wonderful facility is also used by students in our Drama Technical Production. Students are taught by professional make-up artists and local hairdressers to apply make-up and create appropriate hair designs for drama and dance performances.
Staff and fellow students are encouraged to make appointments so students can increase their skills and knowledge in this applied learning environment.
The STEAM NGN
The types of work spaces available with the STEAM NGN are:
- A Makerspace for students to construct and create
- A Hackerspace for students interested in coding and app design
- A virtual reality (VR) suite for both experiencing and designing
- VR hardware and software that is both fixed and mobile
Within the STEAM NGN in 2020, a brand new element will be available to students to use both within and external to LC – Project Space.
This exciting facility within the STEAM NGN will promote and bring a design thinking and interdisciplinary learning culture to inquiry into space and space-based careers in a developing industry.
This innovative and high-tech facility will be utilised by visiting schools and LC students and staff to stimulate work and thinking across a new frontier for Tasmania – it’s very exciting!
Music at LC
Launceston College recognises that the investment in excellence in the Performing Arts Music is beneficial to the whole community.
Launceston College has a fantastic music facility which includes a main campus suite complete with state of the art recording facilities, practice rooms and class rooms. Our facilities have computer labs and musical equipment that equals top end industry standards.
The Gallows Art Space
Launceston College has its own gallery to showcase student art work, exhibit artist in residence work and for use as an area for installations.Throughout the year there are several exhibitions open to the public and this flexible space can be left open plan or walled in with portable screens.The Gallows gives students an opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional environment as well as providing students with an opportunity to engage with practising artists from the local community who provide invaluable industry knowledge and advice.
The GNR8R
The GNR8R is an industry-standard facility that we access though the Launceston Big Picture School in Inveresk. Here, students have access to both metal fabrication equipment and building and construction equipment that is of very high quality and representative of modern workplaces. Students in the associated VET learning programs spend full days here twice per week developing their industry-specific skill sets.
Cube @LC and The Skygarden
These two areas are great for students to use to relax and get together with other LC friends.
Cube provides reasonably priced food and drinks throughout the day – from breakfast until around 4:15 in the afternoon. The team at Cube are very friendly and make great coffee!
The Skygarden is a common area on top of C and D-Block near Cube – follow the stairs to find plenty of seating, a large chess set, table tennis and a small basketball area.
