Chess Club

On Friday lunchtimes, the Launceston College chess club meets in the library for a few quick matches and to flex their mental muscles. Chess is a great way to block out all other distractions and wind down. It is a very easy game to learn and with practice, you can become a strong player. The LC chess club has had a quite a few people participate over the course of the year, some coming for an occasional casual game, others taking it a little bit more seriously.

Launceston College competes in the annual inter-high Chess tournament, last year winning the State title for the first time. See you there!

Extension Opportunities in Maths & Science

The Maths and Science teachers are keen to support students who are interested in applying for opportunities like the ANCQ Chemistry Quiz, National and International Youth Science Forums, the ANZAAS Youth Conference, the Tasmanian Science Forum at UTAS, RACI Titration
Competition, PICSE camps, BHP and other Science investigation competitions.We also form teams for Maths Relays, and encourage students to enter the Maths and Science competitions that occur throughout the year.

Mathematics offers entry into the MAT Problem Solving Competition, AMT Mathematics Competition and MAT Relays.

Launceston Advanced Academic Program

In 2020, the LCAAP (Launceston College Advanced Academic Program) will support students in Year 12 who are seeking a high ATAR for entry into university courses such as Engineering, Medicine,Veterinary Science and Physiotherapy.The LCAAP will provide these students with a targeted expert led tutorial and mentor program to support them in achieving their goals.The LCAAP is one of many ways Launceston College realises its commitment to achieving high level student outcomes and the best possible pathway options for its students.

LVC – Launceston Virtual College

Launceston College is home to LVC – the Launceston Virtual College. LVC is an online teaching and learning resource for Launceston College students, enabling them to undertake programs to support TCE attainment. LVC incorporates best practice models in ubiquitous, blended learning - combining asynchronous and synchronous learning opportunities to maximise student engagement and academic outcomes.

LC Playgroup

Launceston College students run a highly successful playgroup on alternate days each week. The focus of the playgroup is fostering children’s natural creativity and curiosity, developing communication and social skills and encouraging age-related independence.
We believe that children explore and understand the world around them through play. Our playgroup offers activities such as sensory, manipulative and imaginative play.

Children also have the opportunity to take part in craft, cooking and gross motor activities. Singing and story-telling are a regular part of the playgroup routine.

We aim to support parents and carers in the local community and offer this service free of charge. We can also support Family Day Carers or families with multiple children as our College students are able to assist with the supervision of children at each of the activities.

Bar Operations

Bar Operations at Launceston College offers students the opportunity to gain Responsible Service of Alcohol qualifications as well as experiencing what it is like to work in a bar, serving paying customers. Students undertake a ten week course which incorporates the theory in regard to RSA and the opportunity to learn how to make and serve a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.The acquisition of customer service skills is an integral part of this program and will provide entry level qualifications to apply for employment in the hospitality industry. Students who successfully complete this course will gain three nationally accredited statements of attainment:

  • SITHFAB002 Provide responsible service of alcohol
  • SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety
  • SITHFAB001 Clean and tidy bar areas

Family members, community groups, business people and students are invited to Elcies Café Restaurant (B Block, Level 1) on a Friday afternoon to experience our hospitality.

Café Culture

Café Culture is a ten week course which provides students with the opportunity to learn about coffee and to practise making a variety of coffees. Students also prepare a range of delicious sweet and savoury delicacies to serve in the Café which is open every Wednesday for morning tea from 10.00am – 10.45am.

Students who successfully complete this course will gain two nationally accredited statements of attainment:

  • SITHFAB005 Prepare and serve espresso coffee
  • SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety

They will develop skills in preparing and serving espresso coffee which provides entry level qualifications to enable them to apply for employment in the hospitality industry.
